While we all take some much-deserved time away from our desks over the Christmas period to be with our families & friends, no doubt a lot of Christmas wishes and new year’s resolutions will be somewhat career related.
If you find yourself saying, “all I want for Christmas is a promotion” or maybe, “my new year’s resolution is to change career entirely” – now’s the time to set your goals but most importantly, set an action plan too!
So while you’re sitting in front of the box eating mince pies, why not take the time to really think about your career, and the actions you need to take to get to where you’d really like to be.
New Year, New Promotion?
The first rule of promotion is to promote yourself. If you’ve got your heart set on moving up the career ladder, it’s time to make your employer fully aware of how valuable you are. A lot of employers tend to carry out appraisals in the New Year – the ideal opportunity for you to list all of your achievements and to really articulate where you want to be, and when. Use this time wisely to really make your commitment to the company clear, as well as your own personal career goals.
Without a doubt, use the Christmas period to have a well-earned rest, but try to also set some time aside to have a good think about how you’re going to win yourself that dream promotion when you get back to the office.
New Year, New Job?
Sometimes, it’s not until we take a step back or some time off that we realise maybe a change is needed. Whether it’s a simple change of responsibilities or a change of scenery entirely, it’s always best to talk it through with family and close friends before making any rash decisions.
But, if you’ve definitely convinced yourself after a little break that a new job is on the cards, there’s no time like the present to start looking or at least weighing up your options and thinking about what it is you’d really like to do and who you’d like to do it for. Is there a particular employer you’ve always dreamed of working for? Is there a job you’ve always wanted to do but never been fully qualified for? Is it time to add to your list of qualifications and maybe undergo additional training?
January is a great month with many employers looking for new talent to help grow their businesses, with lots of individuals seeking new opportunities. This makes December the perfect time to start weighing up your options and to set a plan for the year ahead.
Merry Christmas from all of us at SFR and a Happy New Year!
